Jazz event on Sunday 6 July

We have been offered the exciting opportunity to participate in the Battersea Jazz Festival! It's to sing in a performance of Duke Ellington "Sacred Concerts" on Sunday 6 July at the Clapham Grand close to Clapham Junction station (21-25 St John’s Hill, SW11 1TT).

The festival runs from Thursday 3 to Friday 11 July  and you can download the programme from here  Festival Programme.

We mentioned this concert last term, and some choir members have already signed up. For information about the concert, and early bird tickets for it, click here https://www.batterseajazzfestival.co.uk/event/celebrating-the-duke/

To gain a flavour of the piece, here are some YouTube videos of the Big Band and Choir of the Bulgarian National Radio singing the arrangement we’ll use (by John Høybye and Peder Pedersen)  BNR_Duke Ellington_Sacred Concerts

The choral performance will be accompanied by the South London Jazz Orchestra (SLJO), conducted by Hugo Jennings. The choirs of St Mary's Battersea and London Sings (under the same umbrella charity as SLJO), are already involved, and Hugo is talking to other groups, with the aim of involving as many ensembles and individuals connected to Wandsworth as possible.

The performance will last around an hour in total, so it would be presented as a long second half, likely with a short first half of Ellington tunes from South London Jazz Orchestra.

Here’s information what's involved for TPC singers - there will be..

  • A compulsory rehearsal during the day on 6 July;

  • A rehearsal during the evening of Friday 27 June with the band, probably at South London Jazz Orchestra's usual rehearsal venue at Mostyn Road Methodist Church, SW9 6PH;

  • Two rehearsals led by Hugo Jennings at St Margaret’s on Thursday evenings this term (dates to be confirmed);

  • Scores available to hire for £5 or to buy for £16;

  • A voluntary subscription to cover the cost of the rehearsals at St Margaret’s (the subscription amount will depend on the number of singers, and will be no more than £20. It's voluntary because we don’t want this to deter anyone from participating).

Over the next two Tuesday rehearsals (we need to know numbers by 6 May to order music) we will put out the list again to record your interest to sing, and your preference to buy or hire a score.

This is a wonderful opportunity to sing this work, and to sing with a big band.

And it will strengthen jazz skills needed for our own concert in June!

For any queries, and/or if you are not attending the next rehearsal and wish to sing on 6 July, email Veronica at Veronica.Tuffrey@blueyonder.co.uk.

TICKETS FOR THE JAZZ FESTIVAL

You can buy tickets for all events via this website  batterseajazzfestival.co.uk .
Early bird discounts are available until Thurs 1 May.

We hope several of you may buy tickets for the event on 6 July, even if you are not singing in it. Please share the link with family, friends and neighbours.
