Opera, Glorious Opera!

For something completely different this summer, join us as we perform a programme of opera and operetta choruses - including works by Gilbert and Sullivan, Puccini, Purcell and Verdi.

At the heart of the programme are some of the great choruses of the operatic tradition: the deeply moving “Va, pensiero” (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Verdi’s Nabucco, with its timeless sense of longing and collective memory; Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus”, full of ceremonial grandeur and familiar splendour. Alongside these sit some of the most vivid and entertaining moments from the operatic and operetta stage. From Gilbert & Sullivan we bring energetic ensembles such as “Now to the Banquet” and “Death to the Invader”, where comic ceremonial pomp and tongue-in-cheek heroics are part of the fun. The programme becomes a journey from lament to laughter, moving through comedy, passion, and spectacle.
