 Choral Scholarships 2021-22

​

Thames Philharmonic Choir, a well-established amateur choir in South West London, seeks to appoint four choral scholars (SATB) for the 2021-22 season. The choir sings a variety of interesting repertoire and is committed to achieving the highest musical standards within a relaxed and sociable musical environment.

The scholarships are designed for aspiring professional singers who wish to develop their ensemble singing and sight-reading as well as broaden their knowledge of choral repertoire. Scholars will take an active role in both rehearsals and concerts as well as contributing to the active social life of the choir. The scholarships are open to singers aged 18-30, or students in full or part time music education. An annual stipend of £1,000 will be paid to each scholar across three terms.

What we expect from you

  • Attendance at weekly Tuesday rehearsals from19:30-21:45h providing confident vocal and musical support for members of the section. (Absences may be permitted with prior dispensation given by the MD)

  • Mandatory attendance at the three main concerts of the season: 27th November,  26th March (Cadogan Hall), 18th June

  • Willingness to participate actively in other musical and social events in the choir calendar e.g. charity carol singing

  • Occasional help with setting up venues and social media promotion

What we can offer you 

  • Annual stipend of £1,000

  • Opportunities for step-out solos in main concerts (dependent on repertoire)

  • One 1-1 and one group coaching session (worth £50 an hour) a term with MD, Harry Bradford, and Accompanist, James Orford, focusing on solo and ensemble repertoire

  • Three ‘Scholars Recitals’ a year, proceeds from two of which will go directly to the scholars

  • Free music hire for the year

Audition Information 

Auditions will take place on Saturday 19th and Saturday 26th June (10-13.00h) at St Margaret’s Church, Putney, London SW15. Please note we cannot provide assistance towards your travel costs to the audition. 

The audition, for which a pianist will be provided, will last about 20 minutes and will consist of

  • Two contrasting solo songs – one must be an aria from the baroque (if you are worried about picking appropriate repertoire, please do email with any concerns)

  • Sight-reading tests

  • Aural tests

  • Informal chat with members of the choir

Applicants will be notified as soon as possible after the deadline whether or not they have been selected for audition. If selected to audition, please send your repertoire choice and piano scores in advance and by Tuesday 15th or Tuesday 22nd June, allowing 3 full days before your confirmed audition date to webmaster@thamesphilharmonicchoir.co.uk
